The Board of Nursing will be starting the process of reviewing their current rules this summer.  They will be considering changes to the existing rules and drafting new regulations as deemed appropriate.  The revision of the administrative rules can take up to two years depending on the extent of the proposed changes or additions to the current rules.   In an effort to solicit input from the people who are involved in the nursing profession, the Board is asking you to identify any changes you believe are needed.  Below is the form that the Board is asking you to complete if you feel changes are needed or if there are new rules you think should be added.

You are asked to identify the rule number that you would like to see revised or added; the change you recommend and a brief description for why the change is needed.   Please also provide a contact name, email address or telephone number in case we have questions about your suggestion.

Your input will be very valuable to the Rules Committee as they start their deliberations so please submit your suggestions as soon as possible.

As Roberta Asplund noted at the March COMON meeting, a ballot initiative is underway in Michigan to place a proposal on the November ballot. The proposal requires the Michigan Legislature to develop a plan that would ensure healthcare coverage for every resident of the state. The organization Healthcare for Michigan (which includes AARP, MichUHCAN, another consortium -- “Divided We Fail” and many other healthcare stakeholder groups) has collected over 100,000 signatures to date, but needs to collect many more to get the proposal on the ballot.

Supporting health-related organizations include: Michigan Nurses Association, Michigan Academy of Family Physicians, Michigan Osteopathic Association, Association of Primary Care Physicians, American Medical Students Association, National Physicians Alliance, Michigan Primary Care Association, and Community Health and Human Services Center, among others.

Below is the link to the Healthcare for Michigan website, which includes background information, printable documents, petition forms and instructions.

HRSA Nursing Scholarship
HRSA has posted the application for the FY 2007 nursing scholarship. Through this program, nursing school students can receive scholarships to pay for their tuition and fees, as well as a $1,200/month stipend. Upon graduation, these nurses must work full-time in a facility deemed to have a critical shortage of nurses - for at least 2 years (some will have a longer service commitment.) For information: http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/scholarship/
